Sewing your own sweatshirt can become quite an addiction! Not just that you can use many different prints and colours of fabrics for your creation, you can also adjust the size according to your liking, making it oversized or better fitting! Later, when you become a sweatshirt expert, you may want to ad various details for a unique look. But for the first attempt, unless you have some experience sewing your clothing, I would recommend to use an inexpensive fabric as you may realise that you nee to adjust your patter a bit.
The first step is to grab one of your loose fitting tops and trace it on a large sheet of paper (newspaper or old wallpaper will do). Back and front part is usually identical but front part has a lower neckline. Trace only a half of both body and sleeve parts. Trace the sleeves separately, excluding the cuffs.
Remember to ad seam allowance.
Put the front and back good sides together and sow together at the shoulders only with a stretch or zigzag stitch. Also you want to use a needle for jersey or stretch fabric.
Next measure around the neckline. Multiply this number x 0.8. The neckline has to be shorter then the body piece so it will lay flat when wearing. Cut the strip of fabric, sew the neckline closed and fold it in half.
Divide it into four equal parts by cutting some notches in the fabric. Also find the middle of the back and front of the main body. Then pin the four parts - front, back and two sides together. You will need to stretch the neckline a bit when sewing them together but do not stretch the main fabric.
Then sew the sleeves onto the body only. After that sew the length of the sleeves and the sides of front and back.
When cutting the cuffs, make sure that they are little bit narrower than the bottom of the sleeves. The length and width depends on you.
Again sew them to close them and fold so the wrong sides will be inside.
Stretch little bit while sewing them on to the sleeves.
