Sewing shorts from scratch may seem difficult at first but once you understand the tricky steps you’ll have them done in no time. For a visual tutorial you can watch my video bellow or carry on reading through the basic steps.
Once you decide on a fabric – here I would suggest stretchy jersey (you’ll want to use a needle for stretchy fabrics and a stretchy or zig zag stitch) – you can grab a large sheet of paper (newspaper or old wallpaper will do) and trace the back and front half of the shorts. Also remember to ad some seam allowance.
Cut out the pattern and lay on your fabric. Take in consideration the pattern of your fabric. You’ll have 2 front pieces and 2 back pieces. Put the good sides of each front and back together and sew on the long sides.
Then sew on the insides of the legs.
Now turn them the right side out and clip good sides together of the remaining middle part and sew.
Next prepare the elastic. Sew it together and mark into 4 equal parts.
Pin or clip the 4 marked places of elastic to the middles and sides of the shorts so the elastic will be distributed equally. The elastic should be much shorter then the shorts waist and when you sew to the shorts you’ll have to stretch the elastic as you sew making sure you do not stretch the shorts.
Then fold the elastic and fabric once and stitch around two more times on the top and bottom of the elastic to make it look neat.
When the top if finished. Fold twice the bottom, making sure the length is the same on both sides and sew.
And that’s it! You have sewn your very own shorts! Well done!
